History

The Faculty of Health Sciences at Osmaniye Korkut Ata University was established as the School of Health on April 25, 2013, by the Council of Ministers' decision No. 2013/4459. On April 18, 2019, the Presidential Decree No. 2019/968 decided to close the School of Health and establish the Faculty of Health Sciences. The Department of Social Work was opened within our faculty in 2020. During the Higher Education General Assembly meeting on June 11, 2020, it was deemed appropriate to admit students (40) starting from the 2020-2021 academic year. The Department of Social Work is in the Faculty of Health Sciences building on the Karacaoğlan Campus. Our students have easy access to various facilities within the campus, including the library, cafeteria, dining hall, and both indoor and outdoor sports areas.


Department of Social Work

Social work is a field and professional discipline that assists individuals in coping with challenges they may encounter throughout their lives, which could negatively impact their quality of life, and in developing their problem-solving skills.

Social work, as a professional responsibility, contributes to the formulation of social policies that closely affect the welfare and well-being of individuals in need. It places the individual at the center of solving problems that impact their life, valuing the person as the manager of the solution process through their inherent strengths.

Social work is a profession and discipline aimed at assisting individuals, groups, and communities in addressing problems related to their social environment. It is a profession that works directly with people, focusing on helping, protecting, developing, and empowering them. Social workers engage in professional practices to enhance individuals' social functionality, fulfilling roles such as educator, mediator, and advocate. The Department of Social Work aims to meet the growing need for professionally trained social workers in our country who are equipped to plan, organize, and implement programs related to social services.


Purpose of the Department

The purpose of the Department of Social Work is to train professionals who can develop and implement knowledge and service models that enhance human health and well-being within both local and global community systems. In this context, the department aims to produce social workers who are committed to professional ethics and social work values, and who closely monitor humanitarian developments and social changes both internationally and nationally, while analyzing social environments and human behaviors.

Program Outcomes

1.

Acquires current theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of Social Work, and uses textbooks as well as other printed and online resources to define, classify, and interpret concepts in the field.

2.

Utilizes theoretical and practical knowledge obtained in the Social Work discipline regarding individuals, groups, and specific disadvantaged groups.

3.

Identifies the needs and problems of both the community in which they live and other communities, works towards solutions for these problems, and plays a role in developing social policies for the benefit of applicants.

4.

Conducts independent and critical work in various research and application areas focused on Social Work.

5.

Seeks solutions to problems encountered in social work practice by considering the conditions of different individuals and groups, adhering primarily to principles of social justice and equality.

6.

Plans activities for the development of staff working under a project related to the Social Work field, organizes division of labor, and manages the entire project process.

7.

Develops an interdisciplinary critical thinking approach by integrating knowledge and skills acquired in their field with insights from other social sciences.

8.

Identifies areas for further learning or self-improvement and takes steps to address these needs.

9.

Continuously follows developments and innovations in various application areas of the Social Work discipline and evaluates technological changes to support lifelong professional development.

Informs public or private institutions about issues related to their field and communicates written and verbal solutions, particularly regarding social justice and equality issues.

11.

Understands relevant legislation in their field and provides evidence-based recommendations supported by quantitative and qualitative scientific data to social policy practitioners for solving issues related to their field.

12.

Organizes and implements projects and activities for disadvantaged individuals and groups in society with a sense of social responsibility.

13.

Utilizes computer software at least at the Advanced Level of the European Computer Driving License (ECDL) in the application areas of Social Work, using information and communication technologies.

14.

Chooses resources for data collection and analysis on relevant topics, and works towards improving and protecting social welfare in accordance with societal, scientific, cultural, and ethical values.

15.

Takes action to ensure that social rights function equally for all segments of society, with awareness of the universality of human rights and social justice.


Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Department are employed as Social Workers/Social Work Specialists in the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Services (both central and provincial organizations), the Ministry of Health (both central and provincial organizations), the Ministry of Justice (both central and provincial organizations), Social Assistance and Solidarity Foundations, state and university hospitals, private hospitals, universities, the Credit and Dormitories Institution, local governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and Mother-Child Health and Family Planning Centers.
